Ushuaia is the capital of the
Argentine province of Tierra del Fuego. It is commonly
regarded as the southernmost city in the world. Ushuaia
is located in a wide bay on the southern coast of the
island of Tierra del Fuego, bounded on the north by
the Martial mountain range and on the south by the Beagle
Channel. Tourist attractions include the Tierra del
Fuego National Park and Lapataia Bay. The park can be
reached by highway, or via the End of the World Train
(Tren del Fin del Mundo) from Ushuaia. The city has
a museum of Yámana, English, and Argentine settlement,
including its years as a prison colony. Wildlife attractions
include local birds, penguins, seals, and orcas, many
of these species colonizing islands in the Beagle Channel.

HD Tierra del Fogo National park
Tour.
Departure from the city southward along National Route
3 towards Tierra del Fuego National Park, the only one
in the country situated on the maritime coast, only
12 km from Ushuaia.
|
| You will first reach
the End of the World Station from where the trip on board
the legendary 'Ferrocarril Austral Fueguino' (Southern
Fuegian Railway), best known as the End of the World Train,
departs. This little train with a steam locomotive and
coaches fitted with fully panoramic windows, will take
you inside Tierra del Fuego National Park, following the
route that the old train run when it carried the prisoners
of the old Ushuaia Presidium during their trips in search
for firewood. The train starts running alongside Pipo
River, entering the Tierra del Fuego National Park. You
will make a short stop at 'Cascada de la Macarena' (Macarena's
Cascade), where there is a reproduction of a settlement
of Selknam aborigine tribe, the primitive inhabitants
of the region before white men's arrival. The way continues
skirting the Mount Martiales Range, passing through an
area where the native wood has been completely depleted,
and you will see a large quantity of fallen trunks, called
'tocones', trace of the former felling in this area which
is nowadays protected by the National Park. A good example
of what human beings can do to nature if they exploit
it unlimitedly. |
| Departure towards Tierra del
Fuego National Park, the only one in the country situated
on the maritime coast, only 12 km from Ushuaia. A fascinating
trip with assorted views on the Beagle Channel, surrounded
by the most charming views offered by the southern tip
of the Andes Mountain Range before plunging into the ocean
and the Andean-Patagonian forest, formed by diversity
of tree species such as: lengas, guindos, ńires, notros
and assorted flowers such as: orchids, violets, daisies,
sea-pinks and Fuegian edelweiss. |
| A trip along peat bogs and
beaver dams, leads to Lapataia River and Green Lagoon.
From there you will travel the final part of Route 3 that
finishes in Lapataia Bay. The primitive aborigine settlers
have left their traces in the 'concheros', unbelievable
archaeological deposits that provide interesting information
about these people's every day life. Return to Ushuaia,
stopping at Roca lake to admire the characteristic weather-changing
colors of its waters. |
